The government plans to introduce V-levels for 16-year-olds in England, replacing Level 3 BTecs and other technical qualifications to simplify the system and provide more flexible options alongside A-levels, T-levels, and apprenticeships. V-levels will focus on combining practical skills with employability, catering to students uncertain about their future plans, while a new “stepping stone” qualification will aim to reduce GCSE resits in maths and English. Unlike career-specific T-levels, V-levels will offer a broader curriculum to help students explore their options. Although details of the rollout are yet to be finalised, the government is investing in further education and teacher recruitment to support the initiative, although there are concerns about the full replacement of BTecs.
